Approach to Laboratory Management

Battelle's lab management approach is founded on simultaneous excellence--in science and technology, in laboratory operations, and in delivering economic and social value.

Our approach delivers a Science & Technology base that achieves national goals and enhances national competitiveness, renewal of the science and technology work force, maximum R&D for the money invested, operational excellence, technology innovation and commercialization, and better math and science education. Using this approach as our guide, Laboratories under our management thrive and succeed.

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), which Battelle has managed for the U.S. Department of Energy since 1965, has won a total of 62 Federal Laboratory Consortium Awards—more than any other National Laboratory—and was selected by The U.S. Department of Commerce as a national model for technology-based economic development.

Under Battelle’s management, the largest civilian science project in the world, the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will be completed later this year. This project, a partnership of six U.S. Department of Energy Laboratories, represents a collaboration of the best minds and experience from many different fields. The SNS proudly delivered its first neutrons on target, ahead of time, and on budget April 28, 2006.

Two of the six Nobel Prizes awarded to scientists associated with Brookhaven National Laboratory have been won since Battelle and the SUNY-Stony Brook team was selected to operate the Laboratory in 1997, and great centers for research, such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and the future Synchrotron Light Source attract scientists from around the world to Brookhaven.
